Chennai: Tamil Nadu witnessed a historic political transformation on Saturday evening as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Thalapathy Vijay officially met Governor R.N. Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and staked claim to form the next government in the State with the support of 121 MLAs.
With this development, the long political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu has officially come to an end, paving the way for a new era of people-centric governance under the leadership of Thalapathy Vijay.
Governor Arlekar appointed Vijay as the Chief Minister-designate after receiving letters of support from alliance parties and independent MLAs. Vijay is scheduled to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 10 AM at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.
Along with Thalapathy Vijay, nine ministers are expected to take oath in the first phase of the new Tamil Nadu cabinet.
This marks a historic milestone in Tamil Nadu politics, as for the first time since 1967, a leader outside the traditional DMK and AIADMK political structure is set to lead the State government.
The breakthrough came after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended unconditional support to TVK. Senior leaders from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML accompanied Vijay during the crucial meeting with the Governor.
Alliance Strength Supporting TVK Government:
- TVK – 108 seats
- Congress – 5 seats
- CPI – 2 seats
- CPI(M) – 2 seats
- VCK – 2 seats
- IUML – 2 seats
Total Support: 121 MLAs
The Governor has directed the new government to prove its majority on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Assembly on or before May 13.
Massive celebrations erupted across Tamil Nadu as TVK cadres, Vijay fans, youth supporters, women, and alliance workers celebrated what many described as the beginning of a “New Tamil Nadu.”
Political observers have described Vijay’s rise as one of the biggest democratic shifts in modern Tamil Nadu political history.
From cinema screens to Fort St. George, Thalapathy Vijay’s political journey has now entered a historic new chapter.
